  • Introduction

Wallace attended Kansas Star University and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was a fan of Kansas State football and attended games in Manhattan as well as their road games. He returned to Oxford, Kansas and assisted with the family business “The Oxford Mill”. Wallace was a member of the Audubon society and had a passion for birds. He participated in annual birds counts at Christmas and made many friends in the Wichita and in the bird world. He went on many Audubon field trips to areas around the US to see and add birds to his lifetime list. Wallace and his college friend Hal partnered to restore the “Old Oxford” mill. It is now a lovely building with a community restaurant still operating in 2019. Wallace was a friend of my father Joe Thornton who was a Phi Delt as well. Wallace and his parents drove from Oxford to Winfield every Sunday evening to have fried chicken at the KFC. They would stop by our home when they drove back to Oxford. When his parents passed he continued to stop by our home. Wallace spoke very rapidly and many of us had a difficult time understanding him. He had a brilliant mind and knew many subjects well.
