Walter Ernest Stagoll 1878 - 1945

Walter Ernest Stagoll of Glen Iris, Victoria Australia was born in 1878 in North Melbourne, City of Melbourne County, VIC to John Wesley Stagoll and Lydia Curnick Stagoll. He had siblings Lydia Harriett Stagoll, Arthur Edwin Stagoll, Edith Emily (Stagoll) Mcdonnell, Maria Louisa Stagoll, Edwin Brebble Stagoll, John Wesley Curnick Stagoll, and George Wesley Stagoll. He married Mary Ethel (Farnan) Stagoll in 1914, and had children Walter John Stagoll, Laurence Antony Stagoll, and Marie Alice (Stagoll) Knox. Walter Stagoll died at age 66 years old on July 15, 1945 at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne 41 Victoria Parade, in Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, and was buried at Box Hill Cemetery, Middleborough Road,, in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County, Victoria.

In 1878, in the year that Walter Ernest Stagoll was born, on June 15th, photographer Eadweard Muybridge - at the request of Leland Stanford - produced the first sequence of stop-motion still photographs. Stanford contended that a galloping horse had all four feet off the ground. Only photos of a horse at a gallop would settle the question and, using 12 cameras and a series of photos, Muybridge settled the question: Stanford was right. Muybridge's use of several cameras and stills led to motion pictures.
