Walter Jarvie 1859 - 1938

Walter Jarvie of Carlton Australia was born in 1859 in Brunswick, City of Moreland County, VIC to Walter Jarvie and Jean (Wallace) Jarvie. He had siblings John Jarvie, Daniel Jarvie, Thomas Jarvie, and Matthew Jarvie. He married Annie (Scott) Jarvie in 1884, and had children Ethel Mary (Jarvie) Henry, Annie Jarvie, and Winifred Jarvie. Walter Jarvie died at age 78 years old in January 1938 in Dennis, Northcote, City of Darebin County, and was buried at Box Hill Cemetery 395 Middleborough Rd, in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County.

In 1859, in the year that Walter Jarvie was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1884, when he was 25 years old, on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
