Walter John Durka was born on April 22, 1916 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan to Felix Durka (died 1968) and Catherine Greszta (died 1965). He had completed two years of high school and worked as a semiskilled welder and flame cutter at the time of his enlistment. Walter enlisted on November 21, 1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 24 and his rank at the time of enlistment was Private, Army of the United States. He served in the military for nearly three years, and he was honorably discharged on September 24, 1945. Walter was married twice. He married Marianne Rosalie Modzeleski (born 1917) on May 24, 1941 in Belmont, Kent, Michigan. He later married Helen Claire Wright (1925–2004) on August 15, 1958. He did not have any children. Walter John Durka passed away on June 15, 2002 at the age of 86 in Pinellas County, Florida.

Walter John Durka enlisted on November 21, 1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 24. His military serial number was 16088210, and he joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. Durka's rank at the time of enlistment was Private, Army of the United States. He was part of the group that included voluntary enlistments effective December 8, 1941, and thereafter, one-year enlistments of National Guardsmen whose state enlistment expired while in the Federal Service, and officers appointed in the Army of the United States under Army Regulations 605-10. Durka's terms of enlistment were for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. He joined the Army branch and underwent basic training before being assigned to his duty station. Durka served in the military for nearly three years, and he was honorably discharged on September 24, 1945.
