He had completed two years of high school and worked as a semiskilled welder and flame cutter at the time of his enlistment. Walter enlisted on November 21, 1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 24 and his rank at the time of enlistment was Private, Army of the United States. He served in the military for nearly three years, and he was honorably discharged on September 24, 1945. Walter was married twice. He married Marianne Rosalie Modzeleski (born 1917) on May 24, 1941 in Belmont, Kent, Michigan. He later married Helen Claire Wright (1925–2004) on August 15, 1958. He did not have any children. Walter John Durka passed away on June 15, 2002 at the age of 86 in Pinellas County, Florida.
