    Walter John Scott Rigby was the son of Isaac Rigby (Jr.) and Ellen Barrow (some sources give her maiden name as Warburton). He was born in Warrington, Lancashire, UK. His birthdate is believed to be Sept. 4, 1839, although some genealogy websites report it as 1836. His siblings were: Jane (born circa 1832); Wilmot (born circa 1839);Ellen (born circa 1841); Fredrick Pierpoint (born circa 1844); Alice (born circa 1848); and Sarah Jane (born circa 1850). Walter immigrated to Australia in March 1858, arriving in Melbourne. This is where he met his wife, Mary Rebecca Catherine ("Polly") Field, who he married in 1867. They had a total of 13 children: Isaac William (born 1868);Henry Edward (born 1869);Frederick Wilmot (born 1871); Walter Bertram (born 1873); Elizabeth Louisa (born 1876); Alice Mary (born 1878); Ellen Mary (born 1880); Christina Rebecca (born 1882); Miriam (born 1884); Ruth (born 1886); Emma Jane (born 1887); Sarah Jane (born May 6, 1890,died May 6, 1890); and Ruby Madge (born 1891).

In 1835, on January 30th, the first known attempt to kill a sitting President of the United States occurred just outside the United States Capitol Building. President Andrew Jackson was leaving the building after the funeral of South Carolina Representative Warren R. Davis. An Englishman, Richard Lawrence - who was unemployed and possibly mentally ill - stepped out and attempted to shoot. His gun misfired so he pulled out another gun - which also misfired. He was immediately caught.
