Walter Leroy Macaulay of Warren, Somerset County, NJ was born on March 4, 1929 to George Alexander Macaulay and Dorothy (Vosseller) Macaulay. He had a sister Marion Louise (Macaulay) Paugh. Walter was baptized at Scotch Plains Baptist Church 333 Park Ave, in Scotch Plains, Union County. He married Marion Gertrude (Stringer) Macaulay in 1958 and they later divorced in 1977 at Somerset County Courthouse 20 North Bridge Street, in Somerville, Somerset County. He had children Tracy A Macaulay and George Alexander Macaulay. Walter Macaulay died at age 80 years old on August 27, 2009, and was buried in Warren, Somerset County.

In 1942, by the time he was merely 13 years old, from January 7th through April 9th, the Battle of Bataan was fought in the Philippines. At the end of the battle, the U.S. and Filipino forces surrendered and a three-year occupation of the Philippines by Japan began. Between 60,000 and 80,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendered and were marched around 60 to 69 miles - most were beaten, abused, or killed. Named the Bataan Death March, it was later declared to be a war crime.
