Walter Rhoden 1915 - 1973

Walter Rhoden of Greenville, Hunt County, Texas was born on May 27, 1915 to Elix Rhoden and Josie Kelly Rhoden. He had a sibling Bertha Naomi Rhoden Gunter. He married Mary E Jackson Rhoden, and had children Walter Rhoden Jr. and Ricky Rhoden. Walter Rhoden died at age 57 years old in January 1973.

In 1915, in the year that Walter Rhoden was born, in May, the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo. The Lusitania was a British passenger ship that was sailing from New York to Liverpool England. She sank in 18 minutes - 1,198 died and 761 survived. While travelers were the main casualty - and commodity - the Lusitania did carry wartime weapons. "Remember the Lusitania" became the rallying cry of World War 1.

In 1935, at the age of 20 years old, Walter was alive when on August 14, the Social Security Act was signed into law. The purpose was to "provide federal assistance to those unable to work". The law established the Social Security Administration whose primary focus was to "provide aid for the elderly, the unemployed, and children". The Act survived many Supreme Court challenges and the Administration continues until today.
