  • Introduction

    Walter Weitthoff was my high school Latin teacher at Gallia Academy High School in Gallipolis, Ohio for two years, 1966-67 and 1967-68. I believe he had previously been a professor at Wooster College and had retired prior to coming to GAHS in 1966. He was an extremely intelligent and kind man with a wonderful sense of humor, especially on a very intellectual level. I believe that during the time he was in Gallipolis, he lived alone, and I recall seeing him walk his dog along the banks of the Ohio River, still dressed in the dark suit he always wore to school. I heard he passed away in class in 1971 while I was attending Ohio University. I have fond memories of being in his class with my future wife - he once told me I had excellent taste in women. I was reminded of him on this morning’s walk when my neighbors drove by with a Wooster decal on their car (their daughter is a Wooster student).

    I knew him in Gallipolis, Ohio late in his life. He had come to Gallipolis in 1966 after retiring from Wooster College, and passed away in 1971.

    Mr. Weitthoff was my high school Latin teacher at Gallia Academy in Gallipolis, Ohio from 1966-68. Prior to this, he was a professor at Wooster Colege.
