Assigned the 53rd Squadron, 61st Troop Carrier Group, 2Lt Ehlert was the co-pilot of C-47A S/N 42-92842. The aircraft encountered heavy flak and was shot down over Holland on a troop resupply mission during Operation Market Garden on 19 Sep 1944. He successfully bailed out, but was later killed in action. Aircraft Commander 1Lt David B. Proctor was last seen putting on his parachute, but was unable to make it out and went down with the aircraft.
