He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy. In his short tour in the Navy, he attained the rank of Electricians Mate 3rd Class.
  • Professional Career

As a young man, he farmed 80 acres in Walnut Grove MN with his father William. When of age to support our nation at war in WWII, he joined the Navy. As the war ended, he returned to Walnut Grove. He attended the Minesota School of Agriculture, where he met his bride, Nancy. Shortly after their marriage, his father turned the farm over to him. Wayne and Nancy would have 3 children in that home: Jackie, Randy and Terry. When the fourth, Tim, made his presence known, he knew 80 acres would not feed a family of 4. The family moved to Albert Lea, MN, where he worked for Wilsons for 30 years. I once asked him why he worked at that dirty, stinky hazardous place. He looked at me with love in his eyes and explained the pay was not bad and where else could he get the health benefits "The Plant" offered. "I do it for you and the rest of my kids. Coming home to you is what I live for." Tim was first born in Albert Lea, to be followed by Rick, Peggy and Saralyn. He was a leader in the community. An officer in the local union, Cub Scout Pack Master, and countless positions in the church. As he retired from the packing house, he would continue working for the church. There, he served as custodian and boiler-maker to keep the church warm in the winters of Minnesota. He worked half the year for wage and the other half as tithe. He planned to fully retire on his birthday in September, but that was not to be. He touched so many lives in his strong but quiet way. Many people didn't even know his presence in their lives. And that made him smile. His single goal in his life was to leave the world a better place. He did that job well.

Scouting
Dad was not a big man by any stretch of the imagination, standing just over 5'7". But I was always amazed at how big he was in stature. He could walk into a room of 300 noisy, young cub scouts and just stand there for a moment. He would not say a word, but just raise his hand in the scout salute. In just a few second, you could hear a pin drop. (I heard this to be true at Union meetings, but never got to see this.) He took on leadership of the scout pack as my older brother entered and remained the pack master until my youngest brother moved on and out of cubs. This is but one example of leadership he demonstrated every day. (Kind of had to be a good leader to manage the 7 of us kids.) Over my life, few people have ever topped his presence in a room.
