  • Introduction

    Whaley P. "Buster" Rentiers was born to John Steinmeyer Rentiers (1867 - 1925) and Margarite Loretta Whalen (1868 - 1940). His father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in England. He had seven siblings: George Jacob, John Whalen, Charles P., Loretta Marguerite, William Wagner, Nellie Elizabeth, and CCharlotte Celestine Rentiers. Whaley Rentiers married Mamie Ruth Quill (1904 - 1973) and they had a daughter, Marguerite (1922 - 2001). He then married Elizabeth Doty, who survived him. In total, Whaley had three daughters. A veteran of the United States Navy, Whalen served from 1917 to 1919, during World War I. He was honorably discharged as a petty officer. He was the third generation of his family to serve in the Charleston Police Department. His father, grandfather, and a brother served on the force.
