    Wilfred Ruland Waltner Jr. was born to parents Wilfred Ruland Waltner (1888-1953) and Suzanne Virginia Jones (1896-1980) on January 31, 1918 in Kansas City, MO. He had a sister Suzanne Virginia Waltner (born 1916) and a half sister Donna Lee Waltner (1938-1980). He lived in Kansas City for most of his early life and on August 12, 1941, Wilfred enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. His enlistment took place at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. He became a Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps and was part of the 31st FG/308th FS serving in World War II. On September 8, 1945 he married Jean Parkes in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. The couple had one child together and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA a few years after marrying.
