  • Obituary

WILLIAM CARL PISKE William Carl Piske was born at Xiegelwieske, Germany to Mr. and mrs. John Piske on December 13, 1848. He was baptized in the Lutheran church at Wolilstiche where he also renewed his baptismal convenant 14 years later and solemnly vowing faithfulness to his Lord and Savior unto death. On the 19th of February, 1875 he was united in holy wedlock with Bertha Ott in the Lutheran church at Woldiah Tyehow. This union was blessed with sixteen children, eight of whom preceded him in death. In the year 1881, he came to America with his family settling in the neighborhood of Mayfair, working as a lahorer the first years, after which he worked a farm at Central and Montrose and later his own farm on Higgins Rd. He became a citizen of the United States on February 15, 1892. His wife departed this life on March 15, 1915 since which time he has made his home with his children, particularly with his daughter, Anna. He enjoyed exceptional health until six years ago when he had the misfortune of falling and breaking his hip; but in spite of his advanced years he recovered and has been up and around among us, though somewhat enfeebled, a frequent visitor at divine services and other activities of the congregation. Three weekds ago, he took to bed with influenza which due to the infrmative of age, he could not shake off. He departed this life on Wednesday, October 11, at 11:30 p.m, falling asleep as we firmly believe, in a firm and abiding faith in his beloved Savior and Redeemer. The days of his earthly pilgrimage numbered 90 years, 9 monts, and 28 days. His departure is mourned by four sons, Paul, John, Louis and Herman Piske; four daughters, Anna Sass, Minnie Pompiun, Bertha Blaesing and Marie Drews; 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 14, at 2 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sass, Sr., and then to St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Higgins and Canfield where the Reverend A. Zimmer chose for his tex "Then Abraham gave up the ghost and died in a good old age, and old man and full of years and was gathered to his people," and delivered a wonderfully comforting sermon to the bereaved family. A beautiful hymn "Vo findet die Seele die Heimot" was sung by Mrs. Zimmer, Mildred Zimmer, and Rose Sachtleben. Acting pall bearers were six grandchildren, Herbert Piske, Walter Sass, Louis Sass, Jr., Raymond Pomplun, Richard Pomplun, and Louis Piske, Jr. The body was laid to rest at San Lucas Cemetery where the song "Asleep in Jesus" was sung. Mr. Walter C. Ochler was in charge. A rich full life has reached its end. His work on earth is over. We've lost a father, grandfather, friend. The ache is deep and sore. The heavenly Father called him home. To realms of peace and rest, and we who linger here must say, "Amen, His will is best." - The Daily Herald (Chicago, Illinois) Thursday, October 19, 1939 on page 21.
