    Cumberland – Willard E. Bascombe, Sr., 83, a former conservationist, died Thursday, January 23 at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Dorothy M. (Vose) Bascombe. A lifelong resident of Cumberland, he was a son of the late Fred L. and Evelyn (Angell) Bascombe. Mr. Bascombe and his late father operated a dairy farm in Cumberland for many years. Later, he operated an apple orchard on West Wrentham Road. He also owned and operated a school bus in Cumberland for 40 years. He was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Northern Rhode Island Soil Conservation District for 35 years, and was the overseer of the operations of the district equipment for 25 years. He was the Vice Chairman of the Providence County Agricultural Conservation and Stabilization Committee for 19 years. Mr. Bascombe was a founding member of the Cumberland Conservation Committee for many years. He was a 61-year member of the Cumberland Grange P of H. He was a 1937 graduate of Cumberland High School. He was also a Past President and Director of the Northern Rhode Island Extension Service. He was President of the Diamond Hill Cemetery Corporation. Mr. Bascombe was a 61-year member of Mount Moriah Lodge #8, F. & A.M., Lincoln and a member of Gaspee Order #99, Swords of Bunker Hill. Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, James A. Bascombe, Willard E. Bascombe, Jr. and Bruce Bascombe, all of Cumberland; 3 daughters, Judith Petrin of Cumberland, Barbara Kemp of Prospect Heights, Illinois and Carol MacKenzie of South Burlington, Vermont; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ruth Harris, Barbara Judkins, Fred L. Bascombe, Jr. and Raymond Bascombe. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 27 at 11 A.M. at the Bellows-Falso Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial will be in the family plot in Diamond Hill Cemetery, Cumberland Bascombe, Sr., Willard E. January 23, 2003. Husband of Dorothy M. (Vose) Bascombe. Residence: Old Wrentham Road, Cumberland. Services at Bellows-Falso Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln, Monday, January 27 at 11 A.M. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday 2-5 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Bascombe’s memory to the Cumberland Community Methodist Church, 481 Broad Street, Cumberland, RI 02864 would be appreciated.
