Willard Earl McMillin 1921 - 1993

Willard Earl McMillin of Rapid City, Pennington County, SD was born on December 20, 1921 to Willard Earl McMillin Sr. and Anna Grace Johnson McMillin. He had siblings Fredrick McMillin and Lionel McMillin. He married Dorothy Nadine Tech McMillin, and had children David Cecil McMillin, Patti Arlene McMillin Houge, Dale Wayne McMillin, Roger Glenn McMillin, and Roxanna Mae McMillin Kuxhaus. Willard McMillin died at age 71 years old on February 11, 1993, and was buried at Black Hills National Cemetery Section G Site 6124 20901 Pleasant Valley Drive, in Sturgis.

In 1921, in the year that Willard Earl McMillin was born, the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres (also featuring Adolphe Menjou) debuted on October 21st. Critics weren't enthusiastic but the public loved it - in the first few weeks 125,000 people had seen the movie - and it eventually exceeded $1 million in ticket sales. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation.

In 1941, he was 20 years old when on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.
