    FITCH William A., Jr. Age 50, of Elmira, NY. He was born May 23, 1957 in Elmira, son of William A. Sr. and Sarah (Seals) Fitch, and died Wednesday, October 24, 2007, unexpectedly at home. He was predeceased by his father, William Sr.; and sister, Regina Fitch; and is survived by his loving wife, Debra Fitch; daughter, Caitlin Fitch of Elmira; son, Dylan Fitch at home; mother, Sarah Fitch of Elmira; stepchildren, Melissa Maynard, Joseph, and Shannon Maynard, Randy Matthews, Jr. and Cody Gillette. He was known as a wonderful PaPa to his grandchildren, Timothy Corbin, Jr., Lexie Maynard, Maximus Maynard, and McKaylah Pronti; sisters, Denise (Willie) Jackson of Elmira, Ramona Fitch of SC; twin brother, Robert Fitch of Elmira; mothers-in-law, Nancy Freeman of Elmira and Lillian Coglan of FL; sister-in-law, Linda (Dan) Otriz; along with many nieces and nephews and a host of close friends. Billy served with the Chemung County Sheriff's Office from January 31, 1977, first as a Corrections officer, then as a Deputy and retired as a Lieutenant on November 9, 2006 with 30 years of faithful service. He was a life member of Southport Fire Department. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Sunday, October 28th, from 6 to 9 pm. His funeral service will be held on Monday, October 29th, at 11 a.m. in Faith Temple Community Church, Harper St., Elmira. Rev. Don Hoff will officiate. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Billy through an Education Fund for his children, c/o Solutions Federal Credit Union, 907 Broadway, Elmira, NY 14904. - The Star-Gazette on 10/27/2007.

In 1957, in the year that William A Fitch Jr was born, on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.

In 1964, by the time he was just 7 years old, in June, three young civil rights workers - Andrew Goodman and Mickey Schwerner from New York City, and James Chaney from Meridian, Mississippi - were kidnapped and murdered in Mississippi. Working with "Freedom Summer", they were registering African-Americans to vote in the Southern states. Their bodies were found two months later. Although it was discovered that the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the Neshoba County Sheriff's Office and the Philadelphia, Mississippi Police Department were involved, only 7 men were convicted and served less than six years.
