William Alexander Swanston 1855 - 1861

William Alexander Swanston of Australia was born in 1855 to Mary Elizabeth (Ferrier) Swanston and William Swanston. He had siblings George Swanston, Olivia May Swanstone, William Alex Swanston, Alice Catherine Swanston, Beatrice Janet Swanston, Winifred Mary Swanston, and George Allen Swanston. William Swanston died at age 6 years old in 1861.

In 1855, in the year that William Alexander Swanston was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1860, he was only 5 years old when on April 3rd, the Pony Express began its first delivery from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trip took 10 days and the riders carried 49 letters, five telegrams, and newspapers for San Francisco and other cities along the way.
