William Alfred Motherston of Balaclava Australia was born in 1863 to Walter Motherstone and Margaret Moore Motherstone. He had siblings William Motherston, Albert Motherstone, Jane Motherstone, Allter Motherstone, Phillip Motherstone, Elizabeth Motherstone, Alice Motherstone, Albert Motherstone, Alice Motherston, and Mary Althea Motherston. William Motherston died at age 75 years old in 1938 in Balaclava.

In 1863, in the year that William Alfred Motherston was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1876, at the age of merely 13 years old, William was alive when on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
