William Andrew Jacob Searle of NSW Australia was born in 1912 in Richmond, City of Yarra County, VIC to Grace Mabel (Brown) Searle and William Searle. He had siblings Myrtle Alice Grace Searle, Daphne Margaret Searle, Violet May Searle, and Arthur Raymond Eric Searle. William Searle married Violet Haroldine Borradale in 1934, and died at age 75 years old in 1987 in NSW.

In 1912, in the year that William Andrew Jacob Searle was born, Arizona was admitted to the United States in February (on Valentine's Day). It became the 48th state in the Union. Previously a Spanish - then Mexican - territory, the U.S. paid $15 million dollars for the area in 1848. Arizona was the last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the United States.

In 1928, he was 16 years old when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
