William Anthony Mawson of Corowa, Federation Council County, NSW Australia was born on April 4, 1859 in Bacchus Marsh, Moorabool Shire County, VIC to Elizabeth Bunton Mawson and William Mawson. He had siblings Benjamin Bunton Mawson, Charlotte Elizabeth Mawson, Isabella Margaret (Mawson) Johnston, Alfred Thomas Mawson, Joseph Walton Mawson, Annie Mary (Mawson) Jondahl, and John Robert Mawson. He married Ellen (Philby) Mawson in 1884, and had a child Mary Ellen Mawson. William Mawson died at age 80 years old on April 18, 1939 in Corowa, Federation Council County, NSW.

In 1859, in the year that William Anthony Mawson was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.

In 1865, he was just 6 years old when on March 4th, President Abraham Lincoln was sworn in for a second term. A little over a month later, he would be assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer - 4 days after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, which had effectively ended the Civil War.
