Having spent some of his growing up years in Argentina as his parents were Mormon missionaries, he was Spanish fluent. During his years in Seattle he volunteered as a Spanish-English translator at a church which housed refugees from Central America; many faced death at the hands of death squads were they to be returned to Central America. this was during the years of the C.American civil wars and genocides. Bill was divorced from his wife and didn't see his child; the latter was esp tough for him. He had been excommunicated by the Mormon Church on leaving the church.
