  • Early Life & Education

Don't know what schools he attended other than he spent a lot of time in reform schools. He dropped out for good, lied about his age and joined the US Navy at 14. He spent WW2 on mine sweepers in the Pacific theater of war. Got drunk, in fights and landed in jail in just about every port they made landfall in. The greatest pool player I've ever known. Only 5'7" but weighed 225 lbs of solid muscle, the strongest person I've ever known. Mean as a snake, all of my mother's big 6 foot+ Irish brothers were terrified of him. Smart as whip, read the entire newspaper every day, front to back, in less than an hour, understanding every bit of it. Read a book every 2 days. Incredible cook (a lot of time on KP duty in the navy). Unfortunately, a heavy smoker, 4-5 packs of unfiltered Pall Malls every day, and a heavy drinker. Finally died at 50 of liver cancer and brain tumors. His last words to me in the hospital were, "Bobby, light me another cigarette", tough as nails to the very end. All of my friends liked him (except for my 1st wife, which was OK because he didn't like her either) because he was funny, irreverent and never treated any of us like kids. I just wish my 2nd wife had got to meet him, they would've been great friends.
