William Cicero Hinton started working as an auto mechanic for his Uncle Dave Miller in McDonough, Georgia in September of 1918 when he registered for the WWI draft. He worked after that for Henry County and then Randolph County, Georgia, as an auto mechanic. Sometime in the late 1920's, he went to work for Yancey Brother's Caterpillar dealership as an auto mechanic. He lost this job during the depression, around 1929, and moved out west with his wife, and young son, Ray, to Memphis, and went to work as a mechanic for the Halloran Tractor Company. Soon after this, in 1930, he went to work for Rodgers Construction Company as a caterpillar mechanic at levee work camps during the federal governments program to build new and reinforce old levees on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. His wife and son went to live with him in tent cities at these work camps up and down the river until his wife gave birth to their daughter Joanne in June of 1933. During this time, his wife, Nell was developing tuberculosis and it got to the point where she could no longer live in these harsh conditions and take care of their children, so William Cicero quit his job to head back home to Stockbridge, Georgia. William Cicero fixed up an old tenant house that was on his wife's family farm for them to live while his wife coalesced, but she got worse and became bed ridden, so she moved into her mother's house so she could take care of her. She died soon after in May of 1936.
