  • Introduction

    William was born in Kentucky but immigrated to Indiana while in his 20's and job opportunities were better. He served in World War II and was honored for completing dangerous missions. After returning from the war William took up residency in Terre Haute, IN. He worked in the construction industry. He later moved the Vincennes, IN area to care for his aging father, Harry Draper. William worked in the mining industry until his untimely death at age 56 from natural causes.

    Served with the U.S. Army where he saw action in Europe during World War II. He was decorated for completing dangerous missions.

    William enjoyed his family, small scale farming and gardening. He also enjoyed weekend fishing trips. Always looked forward to his annual Army reunions.

In 1913, in the year that William Draper was born, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

In 1924, he was merely 11 years old when on January 21st, Vladimir Lenin, a leader of the Russian Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union died. He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
