  • Introduction

My father, William Edmund Meyer, was born in Hoboken NJ in February of 1919(his standing joke was that he and Frank Sinatra made Hoboken famous). He was the second child of German immigrant parents, Herman and Dora Meyer and brother of Hertha Doyel He was the first in his family to be born in the United States. His parents and sister were born in Germany and came to NJ before he was born. As a young boy his family started their move across the country, stopping first to live for a while in Detroit. It was while they were in Detroit that he fell from a second story window onto his head fracturing his skull. But he survived quite well and learned to drive at the age of nine and helped his father drive the family across the country where they settled in Long Beach CA in the late 1920's. Attending schools in Long Beach and graduating from David Starr Jordan High School where he had earlier met my mother, Elizabeth Meyer. They became high school sweethearts. When WW2 broke out my father went off to war and ended up being shot. He was shipped back to the states where he spent nearly 3 years in Army hospitals. It was during this time that he and my mother wed. After a couple of years they began their family and had three children, Judith, Jenelle, and William. They bought a home in Lakewood CA in 1950 and never left. My father was a true family man and was never happier than when he was in his own home with his wife and children. That seemed to be all he needed to be happy. He was a simple man, with very few needs other than the needs of his family. A man with a dry humor, he kept us amused most of the time. He also loved to play practical jokes on us all. My father was in the musical instrument repair business. A trade he learned at the age of 12 from his father who had brought the trade with him from Germany. For many years my dad worked for others but finally was able to open his own store and repair shop. A very uncommon occupation, but one that he was well known for throughout Southern California. My dad developed lung cancer in 1977 and passed away 6 months later at the age of 58. Way too few years for us to have this man with us. He was survived by his wife Betty and children, Judy, Jenelle and Bill. My dad and Elvis went to Heaven on the same day and year. Maybe they met along the way.... Preceded in death by his parents Herman William and Dora Meyer and sister Hertha Doyel Thanks to Judy Winstead for sponsoring my dad's site. You are great!
