William registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, at the age of 22. Then on March 7, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army at Camp Upton Yaphank, New York. He joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers category as a Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) rank.
