  • Introduction

William Frye was born on November 16, 1921. It is on what would've been his 99th birthday 11/16/20, that I write this...I being William Frye, Jr, his son. I wanted to leave this short bio, so he can be remembered. My father served in the military (Army) for 22 years as a medic and helped save countless during the three wars in which he served his country, those being World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam wars. So good was he at his craft that he was the FIRST African-American selected to be part of the NASA's Blue Squad Medical Rescue Team during the Mercury and later the Apollo Space Missions, to help our astronauts as they blasted off into the stars. I'm also told that for a time, doctors who performed on Presidents at Bethesda Naval would often asked to have my dad be the surgical technician on their respective surgical operation room teams. I am unaware that he was ever involved with any Presidential operations. After serving the Army for 22 years he retired from the military he was leaving so he could continue to serve those who remained by making a lateral move over to the Veterans Administration and serving as a medic and surgical technician at some of the many fine VA facilities throughout this nation, his last assignment before coming a real retiree was at the VA Hospitals in Menlo Park and Palo Alto, CA. He was married to my mother Catherine and they were married almost 64 years at the time of his passing, in which he died peacefully, in his sleep. My mother survived for a couple more years before passing away in January 2008. My Dad was a good and honest man, a good provider for his family and he raised me right. You won't be forgotten. But in addition to Lauran and Kirin, whom I know you loved very much, you are now a great grandfather to Dawson Sawyer (from Lauran) and Delilah (from Kirin). Did you ever think you would hear me saying that I am a proud grandfather? I would ask that you say Hi to Mom for me up there in Heaven, but I know she can hear me, since she's right next to you. Thanks for taking me into your life. I'll be there someday and we can catch up on old times, like when you use to volunteer on Sundays during football season and bring me with you to take the disabled vets to the Niner games at Candlestick?, or when you use to take me to Kelly Park in San Jose to play baseball? or when we...( I miss you, Dad)
