William Gilbert Harris was born in 1818. He married Anne Lucinda (Varien) Harris on November 11, 1840 in Fermoy, County Cork Ireland. They had a child Catherine Jane (Harris) Devenport. He also married Esther Harris on March 4, 1849 in Lambeth, Greater London County, England United Kingdom. William Harris died at age 51 years old on June 20, 1870 in Adelaide, South Australia, and was buried at West Terrace Cemetery, 161 West Terrace, in Adelaide, City of Adelaide County, SA Australia.

In 1818, in the year that William Gilbert Harris was born, on October 20th, the Treaty of 1818 - between the U.S. and the United Kingdom - established the boundary between the U.S. and British North America as the 49th parallel north. The treaty also allowed for joint occupation and settlement of the "Oregon Country" - known currently as the Pacific Northwest of the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

In 1846, at the age of 28 years old, William was alive when on June 15th, the Oregon Treaty - between Great Britain and the US - was signed. The Treaty agreed that the 49th parallel would be the border between the United States and Canada. Since the actual border wasn't clear in the Treaty, dispute about what was Canada and what was the US continued for a decade.
