Hackel (born 1915). William H. Hackel married Margaret Ann Frauce (1923 - 2015) on November 9, 1940, in Base Line, Michigan. They had a son, William, and a daughter, Linda Cheryl Hackel.     William Hackel Son, grandson became sheriffs William Hackel, whose son and grandson both became Macomb County sheriffs, died Tuesday at Mt. Clemens General Hospital after a long illness. He was 82 and a retired truancy officer. His son, William Hackel Jr., was sheriff for 24 years. Grandson Mark Hackel is sheriff now. Another grandson, William Hackel III, is a Warren city attorney. The senior Mr. Hackel served in the Navy in World War II and returned to work for 34 years for the Van Dyke Public Schools in Warren, where he lived. He held several jobs in the district but was best known as its truancy officer. Besides his son and his two grandsons, survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret Hackel; a daughter, Linda Ahearn; five other grandsons; five great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter, and a sister. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Tenrowski Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover, Warren, with burial in St. Clement Cemetery in Center Line. - Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) on Saturday March 17, 2001

In 1935, William was 17 years old when on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
