My Second Father, Mentor, and Hero
SFC William H Schouten was a career United States Army Solider and a darn good one at that. I arrived in the S3 Operations Section of Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 70th Engineer Battalion (Combat, Army) in Pleiku, Vietnam on 02 January 1968 as a Private First Class (PFC) Draftsman. I was 19 years old, only 5' 3", and looked like I was thirteen years old. It did not take me long to get into a personality conflict with the S3 Officer, a Major. The Major had me kicked out of the S3 Section and told the S1 Personnel Sergeant to send me to a line company in the field. Master Sergeant (MSG) Fauber and Sergeant First Class (SFC) rescued me and brought me into the S2 Security and Intelligence Section. SFC Schouten became like a second father to me. He took me under his wing and turned me completely around. SFC Schouten became my mentor and taught me how to be a good engineer and gave me On-The-Job Training, so I became a 12B40 Combat Engineer. I thrived in the S2 Section. I owe a great deal to SFC Schouten. If it were not for him, I would have been on my way to a probable bad conduct discharge. he is one of my three biggest heroes. Ultimately, I became a Master Sergeant (MSG) and then a Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3) spending a total of 33 years in the Army. I owe all of my accomplishments to SFC Schouten. Rest in Peace SFC Schouten; you are a real hero in my eyes.
