He married Isabella Grace Symington in 1866, and had children Robert Henry Athorn, Arthur James Athorn, James Cunningham Athorn, Alexander Francis Athorn, Albert Miller Athorn, and Isabella Grace Athorn. William Athorn died at age 73 years old on August 8, 1915 in Colac, Colac Otway Shire County.
