  • Introduction

William Henry Campbell was born in Battersea London in 1884. His father was also William Henry Campbell who ran the Tiger Inn pub which was near the Tower of London and was demolished long ago. His grandfather was William Morris Campbell who won the famous Doggett Coat and Badge race on the Thames is 1850, served in the Crimea and became an Admirals Messenger. William Henry Campbell(1884) married Lily May Carter (my great grandmother's sister) 19th November 1905. they had three children William Henry Campbell 1906 Sidney Alfred Campbell 1907 Kathleen Emily May Campbell 1910 He signed up for the war and was a Special Enlistment into the A.V.C - Army Veterinary Corps. We believe the reasoning behind this was because he would of worked as a dray man in his father's pub and would of met the delivery carts with the dray horses. They were therefore experienced in the handling, feeding and ailments the animals would of had and what to do. As of yet we don't exactly know where he would of been during the war and was possibly at the resting station near Bologne in France and fell ill. ? Spanish Flu? and died there. Hence him being interred in the Terlincthun British Cemetery. He left behind his young wife and three children and as far as we are aware it took from the date of his death until 22nd October 1918 for her to receive £8.8shillings William was owed, It wasn't until 19th December 1919 that she received her finally payment for her loss £16.10shillings. We are also not aware if she received any medals that William would of gained for fighting in a war.
