William Henry Chrisfield of Australia was born in 1859 to Alice Pearce Chrisfield and William Chrisfield. He had siblings Alice Pearce Chrisfield, Sarah Annie Chrisfield, Lillian Amelia Chrisfield, Henrietta Hextal Chrisfield, Henry Chrisfield, and John Frederick Booth Chrisfield. William Chrisfield died at age 8 years old in 1867.

In 1859, in the year that William Henry Chrisfield was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1861, when he was only 2 years old, on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.
