William Henry Furze 1869 - 1944

William Henry Furze of Mt Moriac Australia was born in 1869 at Residence in Mt Moriac, VIC to Thomas Furze and Elizabeth Berryman Furze. He had siblings Sarah Jane Furse, John Thomas Furze, John Furze, John Thomas Furze, and Emily Ann Furze. He married Emma Ann Urch Furze, and had children Olive Irene Furze, William Leslie Furze, Albert Pople Furze, and Una Marjory Elizabeth Furze. William Furze died at age 75 years old in 1944 in Geelong, and was buried on February 28, 1944 at Geelong East Cemetery in Geelong.

In 1869, in the year that William Henry Furze was born, on March 4th, Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th President of the United States. Previously a Union General, Grant beat the Democrat candidate, Horatio Seymour, 52.7% to 47.3% in the general vote.

In 1877, he was only 8 years old when on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
