William Henry Langham of Clifton Hill Australia was born in 1869 to Henry Langham and Elizabeth Maidment Langham. He had a sister Fanny Langham. William was baptized in 1869. He married Lizzie Ann (Hackett) Langham in 1903, and had children Henry Havelock Langham, Arnold Langham, Lillian Iris Langham, Enid Ethel Langham, and May Muriel Langham. William Langham died at age 66 years old in 1935 in Richmond.

    He was a ‘Collector’ or administrative and revenue officer. He was also the Vice President and Honorary General Secretary of the YMCA and the first and only honorary secretary of the YMCA Rambling Society.

  • Personal Life & Family

    As a young man William Henry Langham was an enthusiastic alpine explorer, and he climbed Mt Buffalo and other mountains in the 1890s before roads existed there. He kept detailed, beautifully written diaries of these explorations and gave lectures with lantern slides of his alpine adventures when he returned. His granddaughter, Wendy Hebbard has recently compiled, researched and edited an edition of his diaries and photographs, ‘A Trip Over the Australian Alps - The Diary and Lantern Lecture of Henry William Langham 1991-1893.’ This book is now in the National Library of Australia.

William Henry Langham
W H (Harry) Langham lived in Gold Street Clifton Hill, opposite the Darling Gardens with his wife, Lizzie (Nee Hackett). Their children were Harry, Arnold, Lil, Enid and May. Harry, the firstborn, died at the age of 19 from kidney failure, and the others produced many descendants and lived into old age.
I’m his granddaughter, Ruth Homes, Nee Langham. My father was Arnold.
My cousin Wendy edited and published an illustrated edition of our grandfather’s diaries written between 1891 and 1893, when he explored the alpine regions of Victoria. ‘A Trip over the Australian Alps’ edited by Wendy Hebbard, is now in the National Library of Australia. William Henry Langham, 1869-1935, Harry to his friends, lived opposite the Darling Gardens in Clifton Hill.
