Introduction

First (known) war correspondent. During his career, he reported from Denmark, Russia, Crimea, and many more countries. He retired as a war correspondent in 1882, and founded the Army and Navy Gazette. He was knighted in 1895 and died in 1907. William was born in Ireland. During his life he married twice and had one affair. First marriage: Mary Burrows, Irish. Married until she died in 1867. Second marriage: Countess Antoinette Malvezzi, Italian. Two sons and one daughter (none of them had children). Married until his death. Affair (young man): Anna Catharina Oelrichs, had son William Russel (born 1863)

William H. Russell, War Correspondent

William Howard Russell, reputed to be the first war correspondent, photo taken while writing for the London Times during the Crimean War.

Florence Nightingale said that she became involved in battlefield nursing because of his reports to the paper.

Reputed to be the first war correspondent, meet William Howard Russell in January 1844 taken while he was writing for the London Times during the Crimean War. It is because of his reporting on Crimea (part of Ukraine) that Florence Nightingale said she became involved in battlefield nursing.
