In 1826, in the year that William Husbands was born, on February 13th, the American Temperance Society was founded in Boston. In the beginning, the Temperance Society promoted abstaining from alcohol but with time it pushed for abolishing alcohol. Drinking was a severe stress on many families, with drunkenness contributing to poverty and abuse.

In 1830, at the age of only 4 years old, William was alive when on March 26th, The Book of Mormon was published in Palmyra, New York by Joseph Smith, Jr. The full title was "The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi". According to Smith, the angel Moroni appeared to him when he was 17 and told him where to find golden tablets that told the story of a people who migrated from Jerusalem to the Americas. He transcribed the tablets, which became the Book of Mormon.
