William Isaac Southwick 1882 - 1976

William Isaac Southwick was born on July 2, 1882 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah United States. He was married to Mary Louise Campbell on January 20, 1904, and they were together until Mary's death on March 16, 1958 in Ogden, Weber County, UT. He had children Veda Southwick, Earl William Southwick, Lee Southwick, Harold Southwick, LaVene Southwick, Verlon Southwick, Raymond Southwick, Dale C Southwick, Glen Warren Southwick, and Ralph Southwick. William Southwick died at age 93 years old on May 16, 1976 in Ogden, UT, and was buried at Liberty Cemetery in Liberty.

In 1882, in the year that William Isaac Southwick was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1896, he was just 14 years old when in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.
