  • Obituary

Dansville this week is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent leaders, both in government and community programs. Trustee William J. Huver, 56, of 11 Church St. died unexpectedly Tuesday (Sept. 19, 1972) in Dansville Memorial Hospital. He was stricken at home with a heart attack about 4 a.m. and succumbed a few hours later. Mayor Edward Hindle announced that all village flags should be flown at half-staff until after the funeral service tomorrow morning. In shocked reaction, the mayor and member of the Village Board on which Mr. Huver had served for 25 years, pointed to him as a man 'who had served the community government, had served the youth as an avid scouter and had served his God as a devout Christian and church worker.' The official statement continued, 'It is significant that this day of his passing is a dreary and dark one for the village that mourns him.' Mr. Huver was born in Dansville and had resided here all his life, except for the period during World War II when he served in the U.S. Army. At the time of his death, he was manager of Dye's Hardware Store where he had been employed for many years. Active in the Republican political circles, he was first elected trustee in 1947 and had served continuously ever since. He was vice-mayor, a post he had held during several administrations. One of his main centers of interest was the Boy Scout program in which he served for more than 30 years. He was a longtime scoutmaster of Troop 73 here and had held many positions on Steuben Area Council boards. During the past year he was commissioner of Red Jacket District of the Council. Top recognition of his service to scouting came in October of 1969, when he was presented the Silver Beaver Award at a special dinner in Bath. While the Silver Beaver is the highest honor available in scouting, there were many others for the man who had a tenure in the youth program seldom surpassed. Previously, he had been given the Lamb Award for service to boyhood which he received from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1962. He received the Marconi Award, given by the Marconia Lodge of Corning, in 1957 and was presented the Scouter's Award in 1955 and the Scoutmaster's Key in 1957. During World War II, Mr. Huver was attached to a military police unit and upon his discharge joined Daniel Goho American Legion Post to which he has belonged ever since. During recent years, he has headed the Boys' State selection committee for the legion. Active in Masonic activities, Mr. Huver was a member of Phoenix Lodge 115, F.&A.M., the Corning Consistory and Damascus Temple of the Shrine, Rochester. He also was a past matron of Kate J. Jackson Court of Amaranth. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Perkinsville. William Meter, Master of Phoenix Lodge, announced that on Tuesday night, the organization adopted the following resolution: 'In the death of Brother William Huver, this lodge has lost a faithful and exemplary member; the fraternity, a worthy brother; and the world, an upright and honest man. We deeply sympathize with the family and friends of our departed brother and tender them out heartfelt condolences in their affliction. In token of respect and love for our late Brother Huver, the Lodge will be draped with badges of mourning for 30 days.' He also was a member of the Board of Directors of Greenmount Cemetery Association. Surviving are his wife, Florence Holbrook Huver; two sons, Randolph J. of Buffalo and William A. of Dansville; one grandson; three sisters, Mrs. Muriel Graves, Mrs. Doris Woodridge and Mrs. Josephine Stephens, all of California; a brother, John of Dansville. Friends may call at the Chamberlin Funeral Home where a service will be conducted tomorrow at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Ferdinand Kurz of Wayland. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville. Members of the Court of Amaranth will meet in the Masonic Temple at 7:30 O'Clock tonight and proceed to the funeral home to pay final respects. (GCE, September 21, 1972, p1)
