In 1936, at the age of 18 years old, William was alive when on November 3rd, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a second term. He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.
In 1977, William was 59 years old when on January 21st, President Carter pardoned "draft dodgers" - men who avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. He fulfilled a campaign promise with the pardon. But it only applied to civilian evaders - the estimated 500,000 to 1 million active-duty personnel who went AWOL were not included.
In 1987, he was 69 years old when was the first time that a criminal in the United States - a serial rapist - was convicted through the use of DNA evidence.
In 1995, in the year of William J Redfield's passing, on September 3rd, eBay was founded in San Jose California.
