  • Obituary

Constable W. J. Tebo, 74, Chino Pioneer, Succumbs Southern California today mourned one of the last of its hard-riding pioneer peace officers, William J. "Bill" Tebo, 74, of Chino, who died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at the Sant Antonio Community hospital, Upland. Nearly 50 years ago, when the Canadian-born settler of Chino began policing the township as a deputy sheriff, he was the main arm of the law in the cattle-stocked Chino hills as well as in the developing farm section. In his time, he proved his match for rustlers, gunmen and other bold lawbreakers, besides engaging in public affairs, farming, oil ventures, teamster work and trucking. He rallied from a serious heart attack at the age of 72 to resume his normal activities. Pneumonia developed Monday evenint after he had suffered one severe heart attack last Saturday and another lighter one in the evening. His weak condition from the heart attacks left no hope for his recovery when pneumonia complicate the case. Mr. Tebo, who was one of the three original householders at the time the Chino townsite was laid out in 1887, had resided for the past 20 years at 211 6th Street. He was born in Canada and came to California 57 years ago. He was first employed in Chino by Richard Gird on the Old Home ranch. After figuring prominently in the incorporation of Chino as a city, he served 12 years on the city's board of trustees. He began his career as a peace officer as a deputy sheriff and deputy constable, serving that capacity for 10 years. He has held the post of constable for the past 39 years, winning reelection with opposition last in 1938. He married Allie Hammond in Lemars, Iowa, and they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary last fall. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Fred A. Tebo, chief of police at Chino; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel E. Linder of San Bernardino, Mrs. Betty Good of Santa Ana and Mrs. Genevieve Pedley of Chino; two sisters, the Misses Nellie and Mary Tebo, in Canada, and three grandchildren, Mrs. Aletha Sexton of Chino and Mrs. Betty Knight and Stanley Good Jr, both of Santa Ana. Services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Chino Methodist church with the Reverend E. Clayton Burgess officiating. The Chino IOOF lodge, of which Mr. Tebo was a charter member, will conduct committal services in Pomona cemetery. The K.T. Heinauer mortuary of Chino is in charge of arrangements. - The Pomona Progress Bulletin (Pomona, California) Thursday, April 3, 1941 on page 9.
