William James Murphy of Yea Australia was born in 1842 in Mayglass, WX Ireland. He was married to Sarah Jane (Harrison) Murphy in 1887, and had children John Harrison Murphy, Mary Jane "Fanny" Murphy, Letitia Isabella Murphy, Sarah Elizabeth (Murphy) Corrigan, James Paden Murphy, George Murphy, and Denis Patrick Murphy. William Murphy died at age 66 years old on July 20, 1909 in Woodstock, City of Whittlesea County, VIC Australia.

In 1842, in the year that William James Murphy was born, on August 14th, General William J. Worth declared that the Florida War - also called the Second Seminole War - was over. It was the "the longest and most costly of the Indian conflicts of the United States", lasting from 1835 to 1842. By the end of the war, it was costing $93,300 per month - plus the pay of the regular soldiers. An agreement allowed the Seminole either to move west or to move to a reservation in southwest Florida.
