William James Soyster was born on September 9, 1912 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA to parents James Chalmer Soyster (1887-1936) and Margaret W. Schimminger (1889-1985). He had a brother George "Jack" Soyster (1915-1995). He lived in Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania for most of his life. William Soyster served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant in the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II. He enlisted on January 12, 1942, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and his military serial number was 13047790. On October 27, 1952 Will married Betty Louise Meintel (1921–2014). The couple had two children together: William James Sosyer Jr (1956-2017) and Valeria Soyster (1959-2016).

He enlisted on January 12, 1942, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and his military serial number was 13047790. William was 28 years old at the time of his enlistment. He registered for military service on October 16, 1940, in Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania. He listed himself as the head of the household. His residence was also in Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania. William had a height of 5 feet 8 inches and weighed approximately 138 pounds. He had a light complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. Margaret Wilhemina Soyster was listed as his next of kin. William served in the Air Corps Private Army of the United States. This branch encompassed voluntary enlistments effective December 8, 1941, and thereafter, one-year enlistments of National Guardsmen whose state enlistment expired while in the federal service, and officers appointed in the Army of the United States under Army Regulations 605-10. His terms of enlistment were for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to the law. As a Staff Sergeant in the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, William James Soyster bravely served his country during World War II.
