William John Chattaway 1868 - 1949

William John Chattaway of Port Melbourne Australia was born in 1868 to William Edward Chattaway and Charlotte Emily (Savage) Chattaway. He had siblings Elizabeth Jane Chattaway, Annie Evelyn Chattaway, and Evelyn Annie Chattaway. William Chattaway married Lily Beatrice Smith in 1909, and died at age 81 years old in 1949 in Camberwell.

In 1868, in the year that William John Chattaway was born, on August 13th, an estimated 8.5 to 9 earthquake struck southern Peru. It had a category "extreme" effect and caused over 25,000 deaths. The resulting tsunami affected areas as far away as Hawaii and New Zealand.

In 1906, at the age of 38 years old, William was alive when author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
