    William L. Durain Funeral services for William L. Durain, 79, of 400 Stanley Ave., were held at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, the Revs. Larry R. Fairbanks and Dick A. Powell officiated. Burial was made in Houcktown Cemetery, Houcktown, where military graveside services were conducted by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Funeral services were also held at the funeral home by the Disabled American Veterans. Family and friends had the opportunity for visitation at the funeral home. Mr. Durain died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday at Blanchard Valley Hospital. He was born September 26, 1913 in Findlay to Edward and Mary (Lathers) Durain. He married Marie B. Oates on August 20, 1966, and she survives. Also surviving are four sons, Billie E. of Sommersville, S.C.; Larry D. of Van Buren; Gary G. and Charles D., both of Findlay; a daughter, Mrs. Everett (Wanda) M.) Cooper, Findlay; 29 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Delbert (Cecil) Binkley, Lafayette. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Opperman; another sister; a brother, Norman, a grand-daughter and a great grand-daughter. Mr. Durain was a retired Findlay Street Department employee and was also a city school crossing guard. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He attended First Church of the Nazarene. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2118, Ralph D. Cole American Legion Post 3, DAV Buddy Chapter 43 and AM-VETS Post 21.

In 1913, in the year that William L Durain was born, the 17th Amendment, establishing the direct election of U.S. Senators, was adopted. Previously, Senators were elected by state legislatures. As early as 1826, a call to elect senators through popular vote was championed and previous to the 17th amendment, two states had already changed their process. Governors are still able to appoint senators to vacant seats until an election can be held.

Although they were in two previous shorts, this was the first to be distributed. Steamboat Willie took advantage of the new technology and was a "talkie" - music was coordinated with the animation. It became the most popular cartoon of its day.
