William Lancaster of Balw Australia was born in 1874 to John Edward Lancaster and Eliza (Holtham) Lancaster. He had siblings John George Lloyd Lancaster, Laura Matilda Lancaster, Sarah Annie Lancaster, Eliza Ellen Lancaster, Emma Georgina Lancaster, Mabel Elizabeth Lancaster, and Albert William Holtham Lancaster. William Lancaster died at age 81 years old in 1955 in Balw.

In 1874, in the year that William Lancaster was born, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.

In 1911, by the time he was 37 years old, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.
