Lena caught polio when she was only 12 or 13, and was sent to a body in Ashville NC so that they could try and save her life. After spending several years in the hospital watching her young friends pass away from polio she was strong enough to be sent back home to Lowell. In 1969.I was born. Her only nephew. I spent a lot of time with my aunt Lena growing up doing whatever I could to help her. You see polio had left her with only one good leg and very little use of her hands. She had to wear a heavy steel brace on one leg, and this awful plastic brace around her torso that supported her spine. Her favorite things were sitting in her rocking chair on the front porch all summer long and going to church every Sunday with Grandmaw. All I can say is I love my aunt Lena so much, and I miss her so much. Not once can I ever remember hearing her complain about anything, and she had basically nothing to her name, but she was the happiest person in the world. She taught me how to be happy with just the simplest things in life, and be thankful for the simplest things as well, and not to complain bout life and what I don't have. Love you aunt Lena:`( but I know I will see you again one day.
