William Meeker 1861 - 1913

William Meeker was born in May 1861 in Missouri United States. He was married to Florence (Doughty) Meeker in 1878, and had children John Henry Meeker, Ann (Meeker) Paton, James Meeker, Catherine (Meeker) Voyce, Prosper Herbert Meeker, Theodore Meeker, and Estella Meeker. William Meeker died at age 52 years old in December 1913 in Mexico City, CDMX Mexico.

    WILLIAM MEEKER KILLED IN MEXICO Reports from the City of Mexico to Harry Meeker, in St. Louis, yesterday conveyed the account of the death of Wm. Meeker, formerly a plumber of East St. Louis, father of Paul and Wm. Meeker, Jr, now conducting the business which they purchased from him. It was said that he was in the streets during a scrimmage between the regular soldiers and the rebels and one of the bullets struck him, inflicting a wound which caused his death. After leaving East St. Louis, Mr. Meeker went to Missouri where he engaged in farming. Then he went to Alabama and from there to Texas, thence to Mexico. The funeral was held in Mexico City.

In 1861, in the year that William Meeker was born, on April 12th, the Civil War began with shots fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Confederate Army attacked the Fort a little over a month after the inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln. Fort Sumter surrendered the next day.

In 1877, he was 16 years old when on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
