William Nicholas Brixius 1891 - 1966

William Nicholas Brixius was born on July 20, 1891 in Leigh, Nebraska United States to Petrus Brixius and Mary Dorthea (Reiss) Brixius, and had siblings George G Brixius, Rose Marie (Brixius) Stuart, Barbara (Brixius) Schmitt, John Jacob Brixius, Henry Peter Brixius, Nicolaus Brixius, Casper Belzier Brixius, Harry Brixius, and Elizabeth Brixius. He married Nellie Louise (Westlake) Brixius on October 11, 1920 in Ogallala, Keith County, and had children Flora Marie (Brixius) and Rosine Brixius. William Brixius died at age 75 years old on August 2, 1966 in Alliance.

In 1891, in the year that William Nicholas Brixius was born, James Naismith, at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA, invented the game of basketball. Originally using two peach baskets and a soccer ball, he created the game to keep his students active during the long, harsh New England winters.

In 1904, William was merely 13 years old when the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
