    He was the sweetest man ever - loved his wife, Cosba and had been married to her for over 40 years, loved his children, Alice and Billy, loved all his grandchildren and was the "loudest preacher in the world". He was a bluegrass man and loved picking his guitar, loved baseball (a fan of the L. A. Dodgers) and professional wrestling (his favorite wrestler was Tommy "Wild Fire" Rich). He loved fixing stuff in his workshop and was an avid fisherman.

In 1911, in the year that William Powers was born, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.

In 1934, he was 23 years old when on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.
